There’s a way you can enjoy playing the Saxophone and feel like your sound cuts through, is full, and your range is limitless, without breaking the bank on buying new equipment…
Maybe you can relate to this story that happened to me…
At the time, I was on tour playing 3 shows a night, 4 nights in a row.
Everything was going great for the first few songs, and then all of a sudden, my bottom lip was killing me. The pain in my lower lip was so bad, I didn't think I would make it through the first set, let alone the entire tour.
My intonation on the upper register notes was going really flat and I couldn’t hit my altissimo notes consistently.
My sound wasn’t projecting like I needed it to.
I was frustrated and embarrassed and was constantly worried whenever a tune would come up that featured me.
I had to fix the problem that was affecting my sound and preventing me from performing at the level I knew I could.
The worst of it was, I was NOT enjoying playing. I was more concerned about getting through the night. Aren’t you supposed to enjoy making music?
Well.. I got through that night and the tour, but I had a huge revelation. I needed to make a fundamental change with my embouchure and go back to the tried and true exercises and concepts that gave me success before.
But I did one thing different this time. I found the one little missing piece of the puzzle that made all the difference in the world for me AND my students.
This little change really helped to fatten up my tone and allow me to play for longer periods of time and still sound fresh.
(Performing with Richie Cannata, saxophonist from Billy Joel’s band)
My intonation was so much better – my upper register didn’t sound flat and dull anymore.
My sound was projecting because I had the core of each pitch as I was performing.
Upper register and altissimo notes were even more reliable and consistent. They sounded full and in tune, and I could manipulate them and play special effects like swoops, bends, glisses, Adderley trills, growling and more.
Performing with Vicci Martinez at the Wolf Den, CT
When I performed with Vicci Martinez, Season One Finalist from The Voice, I was on top of the moon because I felt so confident with my tone and range.
To top it off, I wasn’t biting to get my high notes to sound – no more permanent cut marks inside my bottom lip.
After I found this better, more efficient way to play the saxophone, I could play for hours and still sound fresh.
Performing with Bobby Rondinelli (drummer for Blue Oyster Cult, Rainbow and Black Sabbath)
And the extra added bonus to applying these new concepts and ideas was this:
I didn’t spend thousands of dollars on new mouthpieces, reeds and horns.
I just followed the special exercises and focused my practicing so I could achieve my goal of getting a fantastic sound that was consistent and reliable.
And now, I am blessed to perform all the time and play in such cool places like the Paramount NY, the Wolf Den in Connecticut, World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, The Orleans in Las Vegas, House of Blues in Anaheim, the Whiskey A Go-Go and the Viper Room in Hollywood, Lake Havasu, Arizona and more on a regular basis.
Imagine how that would feel for you!
If you play the saxophone as a hobby:
You can play the music you love, and play with a beautiful full, rich tone.
You can confidently perform the songs you love and see the smiles on the faces of your friends and loved ones in the audience.
If you perform frequently in public:
You can feel confident knowing that your altissimo register will respond whenever you want it to.
Your tone will turn heads from the first note that you play.
Performing at the House of Blues, Anaheim
But if your tone doesn't sound good, you may not have those opportunities to perform in front of others.
Think about it, what’s the first thing you hear when you listen to someone? Tone.
If your tone isn’t pleasing, people will automatically tune you out.
If your tone doesn’t project, people can’t hear you and think you are not a good performer.
If your notes are noticeably out of tune, people will also not listen regardless of how many fast licks you can play.
And you need to realize, there is a cost to not dealing with fixing your tone.
A huge cost, one that could total thousands of dollars…
What most Saxophone players do when facing problems with their tone is try out every available mouthpiece and reed, or buy every new gadget on the market. But for most people, that doesn’t work.
- You may have bought your favorite sax player’s mouthpiece and reed setup but you don’t sound like him or her.
- With the new equipment, it’s really hard to get the lower and higher notes to come out easily, your notes are out of tune, and your sound doesn’t project.
- You’re blowing your brains out at a gig, yet even with your mic turned all the way up, you still don’t cut through with the new equipment
- After buying all the latest, greatest equipment, your sound may still be thin, you still may not have more range, AND you will have spent a ton of money in the process.
Another thing saxophone players do is seek out every YouTube video available to try to find the “magic answer” to all their problems. But that doesn’t work either.
- The information in the video may not work for you, or you may not understand it because the person did not go deep enough into the concept.
- How much teaching experience does that person have, and can you trust their information?
- You can spend thousands of hours searching YouTube trying to find the answer to your problems, but you may not know exactly what your real problem is.
- You may wind up more confused and discouraged than ever.
And what happens if you just do nothing and just keep doing what you’ve been doing?
You can follow everyone else’s “advice” and just play endless long tones for hours every day, wondering when your tone will get better. Meanwhile, you may be reinforcing bad habits instead of creating new, better habits.
You will keep wondering if your higher notes will come out when you need them to.
You will continue to feel frustrated and embarrassed every time you perform because your tone lacks power and stability.
I’ve got an answer that works. Here’s more of my story:
Like you, when I first noticed I was having problems with projecting my tone and getting the extreme low and high notes to respond easily, I went through buckets of mouthpieces and reeds to try to find that “magical” combination that would work effortlessly every time I played.
The more mouthpieces and reeds I tried, the more frustrated, overwhelmed and confused I got.
No matter what combination of mouthpieces and reeds I tried, my tone was still not as full, especially in the higher registers, and my low notes wouldn’t always come out.
And, I spent around $2000 on new mouthpieces and reeds and $6500 on new horns!!!
It wasn’t the equipment I was using, it was me!
I was biting through my lip to the point where it was getting to be too painful to finish out a 4-hour gig.
It wasn’t until I found my solution that I was able to solve my problem and help many others sound better and more confident.
My Solution Worked For These People, And It Will Work For You
Here’s what it did for me…
The pain in my lower lip went completely away! I didn’t have those painful callouses inside my bottom lip that would stop me from booking longer gigs.
For the first time, I was starting to get the “core” of the sound for my entire range, so every note would resonate and project without so much effort.
Altissimo notes and the extreme low notes were much easier to play without worrying if they would come out when needed at a show.
And it’s not just me.
I started to teach these principles to my own students and noticed the same results for them!
From teaching thousands of students both online and in person for over 27 years, I found ways to relay my discoveries into manageable pieces of information that my students could understand.
Donna's course has a step-by-step approach that takes you somewhere. You're not in a car without a map. Donna has a map, and she gets me to that place where I want to be funky, and that's where I am going.

I have taken many saxophone lessons from Ms. Schwartz and couldn't be happier. She is incredibly patient and knowledgeable, and helps in every aspect that she can, from fine points about technique to equipment choices. Having played for several years, I was becoming aware of the limits my bad habits were causing, and after explaining my situation to her and demonstrating my issues, she's put me on a course that's showing real results–my only regret is that she was not my first teacher!
Better late than never, as they say, and I am just glad I found her now, without struggling even further.
Highly recommend!
Leo Gilbert
Well-known Saxophone teacher and performer, Steve Goodson, had this to say…
The internet is full of wannabe’s posing as saxophone teachers……Donna Schwartz is NOT one of them!…..she totally gets it about the importance of having your body interact with your saxophone until they “become one”…..her concepts of breathing, oral cavity shape, tonguing, and the mental aspects of playing are nothing short of brilliant……
Her course, Get a Killer Saxophone Tone, will absolutely benefit any saxophone player at any level, from beginner to seasoned professional…..I learn something new every time I watch it, and I watch it regularly! It is required viewing for all of my private students and has my very highest possible blessing and endorsement. Instead of showing you endless pentatonic patterns, Donna actually teaches you how to sound good…..isn’t that the point?

I am so excited to share all I have learned with you and to help you on your journey to sounding amazing on the saxophone. When I was going through my rough time with my tone, I was looking for every possible solution and must have spent over $10,000 to find it. I was miserable and didn’t want anyone else to experience the same feelings of desperation and lack of hope because I couldn’t fix my problem. When I finally figured out the solution, I was elated to share it with my private students. But then I thought to myself, I needed to share this with more than just my students. Since then, I have been helping people all over the world improve their tone so they could enjoy playing their instrument again. I created my course so I could reach as many people as possible. Let me help you avoid the frustration and expense that I went through and show you how you can get that Killer Saxophone Tone that you always wanted. Music should be fun; it shouldn’t be frustrating! Although I thought I would be practicing long tone and related exercises for months, it only took a few weeks to go from an unpleasant harmonica-like sound having even more unpleasant high and low register sounds to playing with a respectable sonorous room-filling tone that’s good enough to Thank you, Donna, for helping me develop an attitude and a perspective that has accelerated my progress, and for presenting examples that I could relate to and use. You’ve got a great gift for teaching, and I appreciate that gift very much. Rudy Smith I have noticed increased ability to play in-tune and less effort in playing the lowest notes; i.e., low C#, C, B, Bb. Especially helpful to those who wish to become better players on their own without taking expensive private lessons. Good value for the price! Frank Valentine The mouthpiece exercises uncovered hidden fundamental deficiencies. Both the high-end and low-end range on the saxophone has improved considerably in the richness of sound. The course eliminated high notes occasionally “blocking.” Most courses on the Internet, and even many instructors, neglect fundamentals, which is what most beginners, intermediate, and even advanced players need. Even professional golfers need periodic brush-up on their fundamentals, right? Problem is, most people look for the quick fix or want to jump to solo playing rather than work on fundamentals that will really make them solid. Dean N. Well, my progress in tone has begun to be noticeable up to the point it surprised me some days ago. Not only the lowest notes B and I feel I can control embouchure, oral cavity and throat muscles much better than, say, 2-3 months ago (been playing since mid-2015 and never had such a leap forward in tone). Definitely this course is taking me in the correct path on my learning curve… way better than investing in a new mouthpiece… Marcelo Soto-Quiroga But wait…there's more! It can still benefit you if you are able to play D3 – D5, or even just 1 octave. The benefit will be that you will get a great start to building your embouchure and playing with a full tone. You have lifetime access to this version of the course, so you can take your time going through each lesson until you are comfortable to move on. Playing in the altissimo register requires A LOT more than just knowing what fingering to put down. The exercises and concepts in the course, when followed using my directions, will help you play in the altissimo register with more confidence and consistency. This course is designed to help you play with the best, fullest tone possible. It is not a course on learning jazz, but you will sound a whole lot better playing jazz! There’s a ton of great information on YouTube. I myself make available a ton of free videos (over 300 and counting) on that platform and on my website. Having taught students for over 27 years, I know how to teach in a sequential manner so that each lesson builds upon another. Keep in mind, there are also quite a few videos from other folks on YouTube that have questionable advice that could set you back for months or even years. You can continue to spend lots of time doing endless searches for solutions to your problems, but you may not know the real reason for your problems. And you may not even realize you are doing something wrong. A YouTube video will also not guide you towards your next step for making progress. My Get a Killer Saxophone Tone course starts you off with a great foundation so that you prevent these problems from occurring in the first place. Also remember, private lessons can range from $40 to over $100 an hour per week. The information you learn in this course will be saving you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in private lesson fees. You also get lifetime access to the videos in this version, can participate in the Weekly Live Q&A sessions and get more support in the private Facebook group during the course. I think it’s great that you are studying with a private teacher. That’s an important step for making solid progress on the saxophone. I have been performing and teaching for a very long time, and have gotten great mentorship from incredible players, many of whom either studied with the great Joe Allard or students of his. Many of the exercises you will do in this course are not widely available. There are concepts I have created that are also explained in detail in this course. These exercises and concepts can complement what you are learning with your teacher. In fact, studying tone with this course can free up your lessons to study reading music, playing jazz, improvising, and much more. You have lifetime access to this version of the course, so please take your time with each lesson. I want you to get it right and feel comfortable with each step. Thank you for asking that! It is very common to feel that you may not be making progress right away. In fact, many of these exercises do take a bit of time to “master.” I still practice many of these exercises every single day myself, and some of them took me months to be able to play. But I will say this, my tone is better by leaps and bounds since I started working on these exercises, and I am constantly getting complimented on my tone after each show. Also remember, you will have access to the Private Facebook group, where you can ask questions in a safe environment. When you are taking the course, aim to understand the main concepts and strive for 1% progress each practice session. You can move ahead to the next module and return back to some of the earlier exercises whenever you need. You also have no risk! Try the course for 21 days, and if you have made a really good, solid effort and are not happy, you get all your money back. All I will say is just give it a try – make time in your calendar to work on these exercises every day for 21 days. Here's a tip: Record yourself playing a piece of music before the course and record yourself playing the same piece after 20 days. See if you can hear a difference. Sure, but I am not sure when I will offer it again, and I cannot guarantee that the course will remain at the same price. You are better off buying it now to save money and then access it later because you do have lifetime access. I know you are going to get so much out of this course: 9. Is there a guarantee? Yes! You are 100% safe to try this out. That’s all I’m suggesting. Just try it for 21 days to see if it works for you. If it does, you’ll be delighted – and I think that’s exactly what’s about to happen. If for some reason you’re not delighted with having a fuller tone, expanding your range or playing with less low lip pain, then just let me know within 21 days – and you get all your money back. You have a choice to make: Do what you’ve been doing (or worse, do nothing at all). You know where that will lead. Is that really where you want to go? Take a new action, and get the results you’ve been looking for. Get a richer, fuller sound that turns people’s heads. Feel more confident when you play the saxophone in front of friends, family, and audiences. Soar into the altissimo register with ease whenever you want. commence work on my repertoire. The difference has been so dramatic that I could hardly believe the sound of the recordings. I sound like what I think an alto should sound like. It’s not great, but it’s certainly good enough for now. The experience not only solved my immediate problem, but gave me a lot of confidence.
Bb flow easily down scales, but also breath and tongue attacked. I can start a chromatic upscale from Bb way easier than before.
